COMPASS® (Comparative Packaging Assessment) was developed by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a project of the Green Blue Institute (GreenBlue). COMPASS is an online software tool for use by packaging designers and engineers to assess and compare the human and environmental impacts of their packaging designs. COMPASS helps users understand the tradeoffs of material selection based on life cycle impact calculations for a series of metrics including: resource consumption, environmental emissions and material health. COMPASS also provides information on recycled content, sourcing and solid waste.
COMPASS environmental profiles represent a simplification of the actual interactions between a package design and the environment, and are based on industry average, third-party verified data that are subject to considerable uncertainty. In addition, the data in COMPASS are limited to a certain number of materials, cover only three life-cycle phases (manufacturing, conversion and end-of-life) and do not address performance or cost considerations for a material. For these reasons, COMPASS is intended to and should be only one source of information used to make package design decisions. Your access to and use of COMPASS is conditioned upon your payment of any required license fee to GreenBlue and your adherence to the terms of this agreement with GreenBlue, the owner of COMPASS, and all intellectual property rights associated with COMPASS.
Grant of License
The license granted hereunder authorizes you, the user, to use, execute, and display COMPASS on the user’s computer. This license is non-transferable and revocable.
- COMPASS is copyrighted and trademarked. COMPASS may not be copied, rented, leased, modified, reverse engineered, have derivatives made, have data extracted, or be transferred or transmitted to third parties. You may not use the COMPASS metrics, underlying raw data, or life-cycle impact assessment results for any purpose other than the operation of COMPASS without the express written consent of GreenBlue.
- COMPASS and the data generated by COMPASS cannot be used in any marketing or advertising claims for any product, service or company.
- The user agrees to use its best efforts to protect COMPASS from any violations of the above restrictions.
- This license and the user’s right to access and use COMPASS automatically terminates without further notice if user fails to comply with any of the restrictions contained in this agreement.
GreenBlue makes no express warranties regarding COMPASS, including any warranties concerning the accuracy and completeness of COMPASS or the accuracy, completion and availability of any user data stored online for use with COMPASS. COMPASS is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind, either express or implied, including, but not limited to, any warranty of performance or any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement of the intellectual property rights of others.
The user understands and agrees that GreenBlue does not represent or warrant that packages designed using input from COMPASS are safe, in compliance with federal regulatory requirements, or otherwise have legal protection from any liability claims. GreenBlue does not accept responsibility for damage in any form that may result from the use of COMPASS.
No Liability for Damages
In no event, whether as a result of a breach of contract, warranty or tort (including negligence), will GreenBlue, its company, its agents or representatives, and/or anyone who has been involved in the creation or development of COMPASS, be liable to the user for any damages, including any lost profits, lost savings or other incidental, special, indirect, consequential or similar damages arising out of the use or inability to use COMPASS, or due to the contents of COMPASS, including any damages arising out of environmental claims, even if GreenBlue or any person or organization that has been involved in developing or maintaining COMPASS has been advised of any claims or the possibility of any claims for damages.
Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, nor exclusions or limitations of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations and exclusions may not apply to the user.
User agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless GreenBlue against any loss, damage or expense (including attorney's fees) and costs incurred by GreenBlue as a result of any claims, actions, or proceedings brought by any third parties against GreenBlue arising out of the user’s use of COMPASS.

In the event of termination, user must immediately permanently delete, erase and destroy all access codes and passwords within its possession or control and certify in writing to GreenBlue that all such actions have been taken.
This User Restrictions and License Agreement is governed by the laws of the District of Columbia.
